Are you looking for a safe and friendly environment for your child to express themselves on stage?
Join us in our After School Improv Comedy program for kids in Ventura County!
JEST Improv's After School Comedy Program is here to bring the wonder of improv comedy to the youth of Ventura County during the school year! This will be a great environment for young people who are looking to explore their comedic voice/comedy acting and/or looking to spend their school year laughing and creating with new friends. This program is structured for ages 8-17.
Program participants will explore the fundamentals of improv as taught by the JEST Improv Comedy School and continue to develop skills like creative thinking, self-confidence, listening, getting out of your head, team building, empathy, handling anxiety and communication, all while having loads of fun! They’re introduced to basic improv games, the art of creating a story as a group and creating fun characters on stage.
There will be a free workshop on August 27th to introduce improv comedy to the students and help parents to learn everything about how the program works.
After the August 27th workshop the students will rehearse and practice together every Thursday at the Bunker Theater from 4-6 pm.
There will be a student showcase in October and December!
There will be auditions for those who would like to join the program on October 27th 2026 and January of 2027. More auditions will be scheduled throughout 2027.
Meet the Instructor
Dawn Balk has been with JEST since its founding in 2018, and is currently a member of the performing group, and of the teaching staff. She has been working with youth in a professional capacity for many years and is intent on endlessly spreading her Improv mania to aspiring performers. Dawn is also currently the director of Jest Improv's all female improv troupe, the Jest HERS.
Dawn was cast in many performing groups while living in Chicago and attended several summers of intensive theater training camps before earning her BA in Communications/TV production from Columbia College Chicago.
Bunker Theater Details
JEST improv Summer Youth Programs will be located at The Bunker Theater (2750 East Main Street Unit B2 in Ventura). The Bunker Theater is located downstairs in Unit B2. If you are entering from the Smart and Final parking lot please go through the glass doors on the left in front of the Thrift Shop and go down the stairs. You will see the theater on your left after you go down the stairs (across from the Martial Arts studio). If you are entering from Main Street (through the Ballet Studio) please go down the stairs and go through their main lobby. Once you are through the lobby you will take a right into the hallway and soon you will see the theater on your right.
